August 2014 – Playing Sports With Kids With Living Classrooms Foundation

LCF group shot

On Saturday, August 9th our volunteers got to relive the playground days of their childhood courtesy of Living Classrooms Foundation (www.livingclassrooms.org). We had so much fun with the kids that came out to Patterson Park for the Saturday morning program that Living Classrooms hosts at their facility located next to Utz Field. We had 30 volunteers show up and there were about 50-60 kids there that day. We all played, soccer, lacrosse, kickball and football during the morning from 10:00-12:00. Many of the kids were running circles around our volunteers out there on the fields. At noon, the kids all returned to the Living Classrooms building where we had hot dogs, orange slices and drinks waiting for them. It was a welcome break for our volunteers, who had to keep up with ll of these kids all morning.

After we fed the kids and everyone had an opportunity to rest, we had our headline component of the day: the water balloon fight. We spent about an hour filling up as many water balloons as we could and placed them in three crates. The kids were each given two water balloons and we had enough left over that when they threw them, they could go grab another. Everyone had so much fun! I looked around and every volunteer had a smile on their face as they looked on at the kids running around throwing their water balloons.

They host these events every Saturday and everyone had so much fun. This is a great volunteer event and is very easy to get to if you live downtown, especially if you are in Canton or Fells point.
