September 2014 – Cleaning, Planting, Mulching, Removing and Replacing with Baltimore City Recreation and Parks

BCRP group shot blog

Our September event promised to be one of our best yet and it definitely was! We volunteered with Baltimore’s Department of Recreation and Parks in Druid Hill Park. It was a rainy day and we hardly saw the sun, but that didn’t keep 68 volunteers (a new Volunteering Untapped record) from coming out. We were so thrilled to see everyone show up and we loved getting the can donations that will be brought to the Maryland Food Bank later this week. The bin full of cans was so heavy that we needed two people to lift it into the car!

Our volunteers picked up trash, mulched trees, planted flowers, cleaned and replaced fences, pulled down vines and had a great time doing it all. About halfway in, the rain came. Nobody seemed to care. We brought ponchos to all of the volunteers, but they were all carrying on with their work as if they didn’t have a care in the world. The people from the park were all thrilled with the amount that our volunteers accomplished during our day of service.

After the volunteering component of the day was done, we had a party set up for the volunteers under a big pavilion in the park. We had two grills going and we served burgers, hot dogs, deli sandwiches, chips, candy, beer, wine, sodas and water. We also had a special appearance and speech by the City Councilman whose district we were volunteering in, Nick Mosby. We even had a Baltimore Sun reporter out there covering the event and she will be writing an article on us in the coming weeks! It is so exciting that we will get to share our organization with all of Baltimore through this article!

We would also like to thank our event sponsors, who allowed us to put on this event at as low of a cost as possible to our organization. We want to thank Union Craft Brewing, Harris Teeter, Saval Foods and Trinacria.
