August – Second Chance/LCF/Audubon Society

For August’s event, we revisited two of our volunteer favorites, Second Chance, Inc. and the Living Classrooms Foundation.

As a refresher, Second Chance is a nonprofit organization that provides people, materials and the environment with a second chance. They create “green collar jobs” by reclaiming materials, furniture, and other donated goods and then offering them to the public at a discount. The proceeds help fund their workforce development programs which break down employment barriers in Baltimore City. This month our volunteers, processed lumber and sorted donations within the warehouse while working alongside Second Chance employees.

The other half of our volunteers spent their time helping out Living Classrooms, the educational and economic force that inspires youth to achieve their potential through urban, natural and maritime “living classrooms”. Our focus in August was to celebrate the last days of summer with the kids! Despite soaring temps, we hosted a field day at Patterson Park complete with football and water balloon flights. Our volunteers manned the grill, gave out popsicles, and had an all around good time with the kids. We also helped them prepare for school by staffing a backpack station in which the kids earned stamps for backpacks and supplies by visiting each station.

At the close of the events, our friends from the Admiral’s Cup in Fells Point welcomed us for #voluntbeering with bargain drinks.

Check out our friends below who made August’s event possible. And as always, if you’re interested in getting more involved with one of our partnering organizations, reach out!
