October – Baltimore Tree Trust and LEGO League

This fall we revisited old friends at the Baltimore Tree Trust and made new with FIRST LEGO League.

We were out in full force to plant 110 trees with Baltimore Tree Trust on the east side of town at Joseph E Lee Park. Volunteers learned the nitty gritty from tree planting experts about how to ensure long and healthy lives for our trees. They got in a great workout and learned the importance of teamwork when rolling a few hundred pound tree into the ground. If you haven’t planted a tree before, we highly recommend checking out Baltimore Tree Trust. They do a great job of making our city more beautiful and healthy. They will certainly help you check that off your bucket list!

This month, we partnered with FIRST LEGO League (FLL), a STEM organization for school-aged children who compete in robotics contests. FLL students solve real-world engineering challenges while developing important life skills. We went to UMBC to create a course using LEGOs that the students would use in competition. This event gave our volunteers the opportunity to think critically and flex some creative muscle to design something that would be utilized by hundreds of middle school students. We truly enjoyed this event with its throwback to childhood.

To relax post-tree planting and celebrate the fact no one stepped on a LEGO barefoot, we headed to Das Bier Has in Federal Hill for some great food and drink specials.
