VU May Event – Virtual Volunteering
May 9, 2020 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pmFree
May’s Second Saturday event is virtual and national
VU is teaming up with our chapters in Chicago and Philadelphia to bring you a virtual volunteering event like none other (because we’ve never actually done this before). Now more than ever, our city and theirs need volunteers to come together (virtually) to help do our part. So we’re teaming up with some past and new partners for volunteer activities that anyone can participate in. Check out the list below and sign up for one of the activities to start with – and we’ll see you on Zoom on May 9th!
Oh and since we’re virtual, anyone can attend so share away – near and far!
VIRTUAL #VOLUNTBEERING ACTIVITIES
Activity 1: Face mask sewing for Baltimore hospitals
Description: We all know these are in high demand and in short supply, so if you’ve got a little sewing know-how and the supplies, we’ll help you with the rest
What you’ll need: Sewing machine, fabric, thread, elastic or other material for straps, a ruler or tape measure, scissors, and a large envelope for mailing the masks to local hospitals or the ability to drop them off (we will send you an email with more details).
Activity 2: Spreading love, appreciation and encouragement through art
Description: Brighten the day of hospital staff and patients by making and sending homemade cards of thanks and encouragement and brighten Baltimore by creating art for The Baltimore Window Gallery and The Rainbow Project
What you’ll need: Basic craft supplies (construction paper/regular paper, markers/crayons, and any other decorative items you feel called to use). You may need also need a large mailing envelope to send your cards or the ability to drop them off at Kennedy Krieger Institute.
Activity 3: Census calls for Baltimore residents
Description: We need you to help call individuals to remind them to fill out their census so that Baltimore receives the funds and resources we need.
What you’ll need: All you need is your phone! A script and FAQ document will be provided.
Activity 4: Outdoor cleanup and #ChalkTheWalk
Description: Get some fresh air and beautify your block (and beyond!) by picking up litter, planting flowers, adding some new mulch – whatever will help clean up and green up your neighborhood. And while you’re outside, add a little color to the sidewalk by chalking your walk with kind words and drawings.
What you’ll need: Gloves, trash bags, dustpan & broom or a trash grabber, mulch, flowers, etc. – it’s up to you! But don’t forget to grab some chalk (sold pretty much anywhere!)
Throughout the event we’ll have DJ Slinger from RNR Entertainment keeping us going and a virtual afterparty with plenty of fun and games!
A Zoom link will be sent out in the reminder email prior to the event. Keep an eye out and make sure you have your Zoom account set up.
So stock up on your favorite drink, put on some clean clothes (or not – we’re not judging!) and join your Baltimore friends and some new ones in Chicago and Philly for VU’s May event!
