February 2015 – Greater Baltimore Urban League / The Franciscan Center / Carmelo Anthony Youth Development Center

Our February 2015 events marked yet another milestone for Volunteering Untapped. We expanded to three events for the first time. Our first ever event was in February of 2014 and we begged our way to 9 people. This month’s events had 20 people at each and we sold out the 60 spots in one day.

We ran events with Greater Baltimore Urban League, The Franciscan Center and Living Classrooms Foundation at their Carmelo Anthony Youth Development Center. For our GBUL event, we worked with high school juniors and seniors on the Loyola University campus. We helped them prepare for the professional world with lessons and practice in networking and job or college interview questions. This was our second event with GBUL and we love volunteering with their Saturday Leadership Program.

We also served at the Franciscan Center, which is such an incredible place. They serve some of Baltimore’s most needy citizens and they do an outstanding job of it. They do everything from serving meals to providing clothes at no cost to supplying job applicants with suits for their interviews and absolutely everything in between. We organized clothing, shoes and book donations and did some other general help stuff around their incredible facility. We also were at the Carmelo Anthony Youth Development Center, which is run by Living Classrooms Foundation. We turned a locker room area into a tutoring center by removing the lockers and painting the walls and organized some of their equipment and storage areas. It will be so rewarding to see students in there learning in an area that held some lockers and was otherwise fairly unused. Now the kids who go to the center after school will have a designated tutoring area.
