September 2015 – Druid Hill Park Cleanup and Party

This month we had our 2nd Annual Park Cleanup at Druid Hill Park and this one was even better than the one we had last year. Once again, the weather did not cooperate and everyone got rained on, yet once again, our volunteers showed up in strong numbers, with a great attitude and did a lot of great work to improve a beautiful park that is one of Baltimore’s most under-appreciated attractions. We worked with Baltimore City Recreation and Parks to put on this event and through their suggestions, we were able to determine where the park needed us most.

Unfortunately, the rain prevented us from painting the park benches that needed it, but we were still able to do so many different things that the park benefitted from. We picked up trash, mulched areas around young trees that needed to be cleaned and needed more mulch, cleaned up an area with rose bushes around the pool and more. My favorite activity was the cleaning up of their beach volleyball courts. They were in pretty poor condition and had so much grass growing through the sand. We used rakes and shovels to uproot the grass, remove sticks, rocks and acorns and make them look like a real beach volleyball courts.

The after party was held at the Columbus Pavilion and we had free beer, wine, Chipotle and Harris Teeter subs for all of our volunteers. We also had a corn hole tournament, there were people playing in the freshly refurbished beach volleyball courts and everyone had a great time. We are already looking forward to getting back out there again next September!
